Plan Sets – What Are They?

For many of our clients, one of the main deliverables they receive from us is a civil engineering plan set. If you've never worked with an engineer before, opening a set of plans for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. With dozens of pages, symbols, and technical notes, it's natural to wonder: What am I looking at?

Simply put, a plan set is the collection of drawings and documents that communicate a project's design. It serves as the official guide for regulatory agencies reviewing the project and for contractors who will build it. Every sheet works together to ensure the project is constructed as it was designed and approved.

While every project is unique, a typical civil engineering plan set may include:

Not every project requires every sheet, but each plan set is carefully assembled to communicate the design clearly and help move a project from concept to construction. Understanding what's included can make it much easier to follow your project's progress and know what each drawing is intended to show. Over the next few months, we'll take a closer look at some of these sheets and explain how they help bring a project to life.
